Beach House – Bloom [(co)Album of the month]

May 31, 2012

Nothing is better for the summer than a new Beach House album. Teen Dream was my runaway #1 fave album of 2010, & for good reason. Taking their sound to new place & upping their song writing to a new level, Teen Dream was an album I just kept coming back to over & over.

Bloom is definitely a grower. Many people have already pointed that out. Upon 1st listen you think to yourself, “Man this sounds just like Teen Dream.” You’d be correct…. sort of. I was referring to Bloom as “Teen Dream 2after a couple of listens. The album has a lot of the same guitar sounds & droning keyboards, but it’s that darker sound in the melodies & lyrics that sets Bloom apart from just sounding like Teen Dream.

Legrand seemed upset in their interview in the June issue of Under The Radar. Not really upset, maybe disappointed is more right way to phrase that. She didn’t like that everyone was saying the new album sounded like Teen Dream.

I’ll highlight some of her statements in that article for your reading pleasure.

“In my mind there’s a back and forth between one world and another world, & I think that I did at points in this album go to a darker place……. I also think every song is differnt….. I don’t want to, but one could go through each song and discover a different place in the spectrum.” – Victoria Legrand

“I just think people aren’t listening enough…….. Don’t just settle for what someone else thinks, & not just for us; that’s for all music.” – Victoria Legrand

I was fortunate enough to get to see them on tour last time around & I’ve got tickets to go & see them again this summer. This time headlining the show!

Go pick up the new album for yourself. In the mean time, here are a couple of my favorite tracks from the album:
