Album of the month (x3): June 2012

July 27, 2012

I took a small vacation & have gotten pretty behind on my music posts. There have been quite a few great albums released in the past couple months. Since there have been so many I’ve really enjoyed, here are my top 3 albums for the month of June.

Clams CasinoInstrumental Mixtape 2

Clams Casino has to be my favorite producer/beat maker for the past couple years. He has worked with artists such as: Lil B, Mac Miller, Main Attrakionz, A$AP Rocky, & The Weeknd. His songs on A$AP Rocky’s mixtape last year, LiveLoveA$AP, helped make it my favorite mixtape of all. On LiveLoveA$AP, he made the beats for:

“Leaf” (A$AP Rocky & Main Attrackionz)

All 4 of those songs were some of my favorite rap tracks of the year. These are all featured on his 2nd free mixtape release. Stripped down to just the instrumental songs, listening to this mixtape is like watching someone build a skyscraper after you have only just seen the tall buildings. Hearing how all the small details work together on these songs, I just can’t get enough of these beats. I hope Mr. Clammy Clams keeps doing his thing for a long time. He blows me away with every new song I hear. (The mixtape was a free download, but I couldn’t find a download today, sorry.)

Peaking LightsLucifer

Peaking Lights was introduced to me last year by Gorilla vs. Bear & after hearing the 1st synth-pop hazy dub vibe of their 1st single- I bought the album, 936, immediately. I wasn’t disappointed either. 936 ended up being in my top 20 for 2011. Lucifer has that same potential. And no this album is not named after Satan or have anything to do with devil worship. It’s more of an album about where they are now in their life: new parents that just had a baby boy.

Lucifer carries on that same hazy dub synth-pop sound with hints of reggae that 936 had. I think you should give it try, I think it’s a great summer album. Go fire up the grill, put your favorite drinks on ice, put Lucifer on & enjoy the summer.

I was really excited about this album before it’s release. After getting my hands on it, I found out my excitement was justified. WIXIW is Liars most electronic album to date, and some were even comparing it Radiohead. I don’t like making comparisons like that, but I can say that I like both this album & Radiohead, even though I don’t hear it in that way.

The 1st single from the album “No. 1 Against The Rush,” is easily one of my favorite tracks of the year. As explained to me by my friend at GhostGoth, the song title refers to football. Yeah, you heard that right. I think they are big 49ers fans & refers to the 49ers killer rush defense. If you still aren’t following that is alright, just go pick up the album & enjoy the great music.

(#1 against the rush = fewest yards allowed by a defense over the 2011-2012 NFL season)

I’m so glad you dig ASAP Rocky :3 it’s been more than about time that someone remixed “Hey Big Spender.”

I haven’t actually heard that track. I’ll check it out. But yeah, LiveLoveA$AP, was probably my most listened to album last year. I’m also excited to hear the A$AP Mob album that is coming out this fall.
