Album of the month: 3rd qtr 2012 (Jul-Sep)

October 29, 2012

Once again, I’m behind at posting my albums of the month. There have been some really great ones to come out over the summer. I’ll cover 6 albums that came out July through September, so lets get started with July. (I have posted a song from each album at the bottom of this post.)

Purity RingShrines

I had the opportunity to see these two perform with Neon Indian & Com Truise last Fall. They were great & also one of the main reasons I made the 3.5 hr drive with my buddies to see the show. Purity Ring consists of Megan James & Corin Roddick. (Roddick was formerly a member of GOBBLE GOBBLE who now without him, they call themselves Born Gold.) They are both from Montreal, Quebec & are making some of the best synth-pop today. Check them out, you won’t be disappointed.

Frank OceanChannel Orange

This is an album that took me by surprise, I really don’t always get into a lot of R&B these days, but man do I dig this. Frank Ocean came out that he was gay right before this was released. I have no idea why that would change anyone’s opinion about his music, but for some it matters. I’m not a homophobe so I could care less what his sexual preference is. What I do care about is that this one of the best R&B albums of the year. If you like R&B you owe it to yourself to at least listen to this album.

The xxCoexist

There is no need for me to go over this album with great detail. After their 2009 debut album, almost everyone knows who The xx is today. Their latest album, to me, seems almost perfect. Sim & Croft continue their beautiful alternating singing & Jamie brings in his usual creative beats when needed. I personally love this album more than their debut in 2009, while I can’t promise you will like it better yourself, you should at least still enjoy it all the same. It is still The xx after all. (This is currently 1 of my top 2 favorite albums of this year.)

Wild Nothing Nocturne

Since Wild Nothing released Gemini in 2010, I have considered them to be one of my favorite new bands. I have no idea how many times I listened to that album, but I always return to it. Their 2nd full length album, Nocturne, is more of the same sound & written mostly  by the lead singer, Jack Tatum. In an interview I read with Tatum, the songs aren’t always personal in content. He said something to effect that if you didn’t have enough love stories to write about that you’d have do what he did & make some of it up. So, the song “Only Heather” may not be about anyone named Heather. But that is irrelevant, because Wild Nothing is making some of my favorite dream-pop today.

I’m lucky that I got to see them open for Beach House this summer. They sounded great live & I hope that isn’t the last time I get a chance to hear them play live.

How To Dress WellTotal Loss

I consider this album to be a masterpiece. Yes, I like it that much. How To Dress Well (HTDW) started out as a low-fi sort of R&B act. To listen to the new album & think of where Krell started out, it is pretty amazing. Total Loss is an album about how Krell is coping with the loss of his best friend, relatives, & losing touch with others close to him. The album may be a little bit of downer, but how it makes me connect with it emotionally is what I think makes it so great.

I would say for falsetto voices, Krell & Vernon of Bon Iver have perfected the art. (This & The xx are my 2 favorite albums of this year.)

Grizzly BearShields

Veckatimest was my #1 favorite album in 2009, so yeah, I had pretty high expectations for this new album. Grizzly Bear only puts out an album every 2-3 years & I’m totally cool with that because every release has been solid thus far. Since most everyone knows about them already, I won’t write much about Shields. I’ll just say that if you like their previous albums, there is no reason why you won’t like this new one.  Yet, another solid release by the band.
