October ’12 – Albums of the month

November 28, 2012

I’m a few weeks late with this post again, but I’ve picked my favorite 3 albums released in October.

Kendrick Lamar – good kid, m.A.A.d city

Lamar comes through with his 1st full length studio album. He is a member of the crew Black Hippy (w/ Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, & Schoolboy Q) but signed under Dr. Dre’s label & seems to be his new young protégé. GKMC (good kid, m.A.A.d city) is pretty much a life story of what he went through growing up in Compton. Skits between songs take you through what it was like a day of his life as a teenager on the streets. Influences of friends, taking his mom’s car, dating a girl that wasn’t from Compton, & that growing up on the wrong side of the streets in LA could get you shot for that reason alone.

After 1st listen of GKMC, I seemed to reflect back on the influences of what I remembered from Outkast’s ATLiens, & how I remembered Andre 3000’s alien-sounding voice when it was sped up over a beat. You can also feel the influence of Compton over the entire album. Songs with the homage to 90’s west coast rap will have you reminiscing about music that came out around the time when Dre dropped The Chronic on the world in ’92.

I’m sure I could go on & on about GKMC, but not nearly as good or in depth as Jeff Weiss did HERE on MTV Hive. If you have a solid 5 minutes or so, I def recommend the read.

Godspeed You Black Emperor! – ‘Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend!

Bat For Lashes – The Haunted Man
